Summer starts with a scorcher
Temperatures top 90 degrees on official first day of the season
The beach was packed today as temperatures climbed past 90 degrees on the official first day of summer.
Not many people were cruising the boardwalk, but the sand was full of colorful umbrellas as visitors sought refuge from the heat and humidity today.
“Today is a good beach day,” said badge checker Rick Hostettler. “If it wasn’t so stifling, we’d have even more people.”
This is Hostettler’s sixth year checking badges in Asbury Park, and he said he has rarely seen a day this hot in June. Although the beach was busy today, the best days for badge sales are less humid, he said.
The ocean is unseasonably warm, with temperatures reaching 66 or 67 degrees today, Hostettler said. Normally, the water is much cooler this time of year, but the mild winter kept water temperatures higher than normal, he said.
The high temperature today was 94 degrees, according to Weather.com forecasts. The high for tomorrow is 96 degrees. Temperatures will decrease to 90 degrees with thunderstorms on Friday, and will be back to the mid-80s in time for the weekend.
