Police arrest man after he pointed handgun at woman
Man fled on foot, tossed loaded handgun in pursuit
Asbury Park police arrested a city resident Tuesday after they spotted him pointing a handgun at a woman near the Vita Gardens apartment complex.
Officers of the Asbury Park Street Crimes unit saw Quamere Smith, 23, Asbury Park, raise a handgun and point it at a female subject who was sitting inside a parked vehicle near the apartment complex, according to Officer Michael Casey, the department’s communications officer.
When police intervened and identified themselves, Smith fled on foot, Casey said.
A perimeter was set up near the location and police were able to locate Smith on Prospect Avenue near the Hammary basketball courts, he said. In the pursuit, police observed Smith toss the gun, a .380-caliber loaded Baretta, which they recovered, he said.
Smith was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and obstructing, Casey said.
Police located the female victim and took a report from her, Casey said. He could not say whether Smith knew the woman.
Smith’s bail was set at $205,000 with a cash-only requirement and a mandatory bail source hearing. He was transported to Monmouth County Correctional Institution.
