Running their way to a brighter future
Nonprofit girls' program teaches confidence, skills, healthy choices
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County [BGCM] announced a successful new partnership with Girls on the Run of Central NJ, an organization dedicated to educating and empowering girls at an early age in order to prevent the display of at-risk activities in the future, according to a BGCM news release.
A 10-week Girls on the Run program was implemented this fall, helping girls ages 8-13 in Asbury Park and Red Bank discover their confidence, learn life skills and make healthy choices.
The girls met every Wednesday and Friday afternoon. Each session included a lesson on life values, an activity involving that topic and time dedicated to running and fitness. Lessons included respect for self, respect for others, the importance of gratitude, resisting peer pressure, and making healthy life choices. The program concluded Nov. 23 with a celebratory 5k run in Somerville.
“They were extremely proud of their accomplishments this season,” said BGCM staffer Jonathan Dew, who managed the program at the Asbury Park Unit [shown below, wearing orange]. “And I was so proud of them—they did such a great job completing both the program and the race.”
The next session of the Girls on the Run Program is schedule for spring. To learn more about Girls on the Run of Central NJ, visit their website.
