Main Street in Allenhurst was closed for approximately seven hours today after a transformer on a utility pole blew up causing live electrical wires to fall to the ground, according to police Chief Michael Schneider.

The transformer, located in front of the vacant Jersey Central Power & Light [JCP & L] building on the western side of the street, malfunctioned before 8 a.m. The street was closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic just before 8 a.m. while JCP & L crews conducted repairs. It opened shortly before 3 p.m.

“It is undetermined if the electrical equipment malfunctioned due to the weather, which did involve some frozen precipitation,” Schneider said.

No injuries were reported.

Allenhurst’s public work’s department assisted with the closure of both Northbound and Southbound lanes.
