The City Council will present a resolution setting guidelines for Madison Marquette’s proposed food truck court at its next regular meeting, officials said Wednesday night.
The boardwalk redeveloper needs the Council’s approval in order to advance to the Planning Board.
The food truck court, proposed on land the redeveloper leases north of the vacant Sunset Avenue pavilion, would be operational by summer.
The proposal would bring six food trucks to the open space adjacent to the boardwalk and at the end of Sixth Avenue between the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel and the North Beach condominiums. The food truck court would include a landscaped perimeter, sting lights, picnic tables, umbrellas, and two game areas designed to accommodate passive recreation games like bocce, horseshoe, or corn hole.
Mayor John Moor said he wants to see a commitment to implement hard-wired electricity and water lines before considering the matter.
Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn said her stipulations would included no generators, regulated hours of operation, no signage, no more than a 2-year agreement, a better garbage plan and keeping area restrooms open until 9 p.m. Quinn said she is also waiting for a fire department review of the plan.
Madison Marquette has a 24½ year lease agreement for the property where the project sits. While the land is not zoned for construction of a permanent structure, temporary structures like the food truck are permitted, said Donald Sammet, the city’s director of planning and redevelopment.
Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton said she would like to know the scheduled times for the food trucks entering and exiting the site.
Councilman Joe Woerner said he wants a general overview of how the temporary plan fits into the overall redevelopment plan for the boardwalk’s north end.
The City Council will vote whether or not to advance the food truck court project to the Planning Board via the resolution at the March 25 meeting, city attorney Frederick Raffetto said.
