As APTV’s content grows so does its need for volunteers.
Created 2½ years ago, the public access station primarily served as an outlet to broadcast town meetings, be it City Council or Board of Education.
Today the volunteer 9-member board of directors and volunteer staff of four are working to expand content in order to inform, educate and inform its audience.
“We’re trying to add more Asbury Park events and offer news that is pertinent to residents,” Board President Doug Ferrari said.
In the past few months, APTV has offered profiles on this season’s gallery openings, the Deal Lake watershed cleanup, the Junior Entrepreneur Training Program, the Wonder Bar’s seasonal Yappy Hour grand opening, the Asbury Park High School Debate Team [photo at right], the Annual Easter Parade and The Community Action Network’s Year in Review.
“We’re looking to diversify the programming,” Board Member Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn said. “We’re trying to make [the content] innovative and artsy to represent the diversity in Asbury Park.”
Quinn said the APTV crew has initiated a relationship with Asbury Park School Superintendent. Dr. Lamont Reppollet to develop monthly segments featuring students’ extracurricular programs as well as to develop a school media program.
“He’s been very supportive,” Quinn said.
But with these goals and initiatives comes the dire need for volunteers. Quinn said APTV would be willing to train anyone with an interest in all levels of broadcast television.
Currently, APTV is available on line and via two dedicated Verizon and Comcast cable channels, Ferrari said.
“In the future we want to have one station dedicated to town meetings and the other devoted to feature news pieces,” Ferrari said.
APTV runs on a $25,000 annual budget funded by the municipality via cable franchise fees, Ferrari said.
Their office is located on the second floor of city hall at 1 Municipal Plaza. The APTV meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of the month in their office.
