This year’s National Night out will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Municipal Parking Lot along Main Street.

“National Night Out brings the community together to increase awareness about police programs in the city, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch, and other anti-crime efforts,” said Tom Gilmour, Director of Economic Development.

Attendees can enjoy free food, music, video games and kids’ rides.

Over 38 million participate in the annual event, according to the National Night Out, website.

The event, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, was held in August 1984. Over 400 communities in 23 states took part in the inaugural event. Today, 16,650 communities across the nation, in U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide hold National Night Out events.

In 2014, the NATW launched its Dog Walker Watch Awareness program to encourage those who walk dogs to serve as a community’s neighborhood watch agent.
