Neptune man charged in Friday night stabbing
ordered to stay away from victim and crime scene
The Asbury Park Police Department charged arrested and charged a Neptune man Friday night with the stabbing of a 25-year-old city man, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced Monday.
Anthony J. Butts, 21, is charged with first-degree attempted murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
Butts is being held at Monmouth County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail set by Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Richard W. English, with no option to post a 10 percent bond,
Asbury Park police responded to a report of a stabbing along the 1400 block of Springwood Avenue near 1:10 a.m. Friday. The 25-year-old victim was found with multiple stab wounds and transported to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition.
If convicted of attempted murder, Butts faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, subject to the provisions of the “No Early Release Act,” requiring he serve 85 percent of the sentence imposed before he is eligible for parole, Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Charles Webster said. If convicted of the weapon possession for unlawful purpose charge, he faces three to five years in prison and 18 months for the unlawful possession of a weapon charge.
Butts was ordered to have no contact with the victim and may not return to the scene of his crime.
