Drunk-driving crack-down campaign launched
Monmouth County Sheriff Golden: police will be out in full force
As summer winds down, Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden has launched a local “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
“We want everyone to enjoy the remainder of the summer, but, if you are going to drink, don’t drive, it’s as simple as that,” Golden said. “Law enforcement will be out in full force and on the lookout for drunk drivers.”
The initiative is part of the national campaign led here by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and will through Labor Day, Sept. 7.
Golden said many local police stations received grants to run the crack-down against drunk driving program.
State law considers one over the legal limit of alcohol consumption who measures a .08 or greater blood alcohol concentration.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 146 of the 542 fatalities on state roadways in 2013 involved alcohol impaired driving.
“Any fatality or crash on our roads is one too many,” Golden said. “Enforcing the law and educating the public about the dangers of drinking and driving helps keep our roadways safer.”
Suggested safety rules include:
• Appointing a designated driver who will not drink alcohol.
• Calling a cab, sober friend or family member if you are impaired.
• Offer to find someone a ride or alert the nearest law enforcement agency if you see someone about to get behind the wheel or on a motorcycle.
• Under no circumstances should adults provide alcohol to a minor or allow anyone under 21 to consume alcohol while at their home.
