A city resident died Monday evening after he was hit by a train along the North Jersey Coastline in Asbury Park, NJ transit spokesperson Nancy Snyder said.
The train struck Marcelo Garcia-Roque, 20, of Asbury Park, near 8:55 p.m. Monday on the tracks close to the Monroe Avenue crossing, just east of the Asbury Park train station, Snyder said.
Garcia-Roque is described as a trespasser because he was on the tracks as the train passed through.
“The trespasser was pronounced deceased at a local hospital,” she said.
The eastbound train left Long Branch at 8:43 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Bay Head at 9:25 p.m. There were 58 customers and crew on the train; none of whom were injured.
“The incident remains under investigation,” Snyder said. “We urge everyone to obey downed rail grade crossing gates. You should cross only at designated areas and expect a train at any time on any track.”
