Three veteran police officers promoted
Salerno: Crime rate down 30 percent over last year
Three of the 91-member Asbury Park Police Department’s veteran officers were promoted Thursday morning before an audience of close to 70 friends, family members, and colleagues.
The ceremony was led by Acting Police Chief Anthony Salerno, who said crime in the city is down 30 percent over last year. The crime rate had dropped 21.6 percent over 2013 figures.
According to the annual FBI ‘Crime in the United States’ report Asbury Park violent crime reduced by 55 cases in 2014. The totals are comprised of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robber, and aggravated assault charges.
“It’s an all-time low,” Salerno said.
“It’s because of these folks here who got the job done,” he said gesturing to the officers who attended the ceremony in a show of support.
Eddy Raisin and Daniel Kowsaluk were promoted to the rank of sergeant and Jeff White became a lieutenant/watch commander.
Raisin joined the police department in July 2000.
“He’s made a tremendous impact especially in the narcotics and drug area,” Salerno said. “He’s been a vital part of proactive policing.”
Kowsaluk joined the department in January 2006 and spent 8 years in the detective bureau. He served as President of the Police Benevolent Association Local #6.
“He will be sorely missed in the detective bureau,” Salerno said. “World class detective, terrific employee especially with major crimes.”
White served as a special police officer before joining the force in July 1998. He became a sergeant in December 2005.
“Just like Eddy Raisin, Jeff White spent a long time in the street crimes narcotic and gangs area,” Salerno said. “He made a huge difference out in the street in enforcement.”
City Clerk Cindy Dye swore the officers into their new posts.
“On behalf of the Mayor and City Council and the administration, I want to congratulate these three officers,” Acting City Manager Anthony Nuccio said. “I want to thank their families because they help to mold these individuals and they have been understanding to some of the perils and some of the things these officers go through.”
