A groundbreaking ceremony for the long awaited Springwood Avenue Park is slated for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Economic Director Tom Gilmour announced today.

The new park, located in the 1000 block of Springwood Avenue between Atkins and Union Avenues, is part of the city’s Springwood Avenue Redevelopment Plan.

“This is so exciting,” said Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton. “Construction is finally happening and we hope that it will be the catalyst to jumpstart other development on Springwood Avenue.”

The 1.3 million project was delayed due to a gap in funding. The Monmouth County Conservation Foundation provided a $150,000 grant to close the shortfall.

Other funding came from Community Development grants, city funding and grants from the Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Fund.

The Springwood Avenue Redevelopment plan was adopted on February 6, 2008 and amended on August 20, 2014, Gilmour said.

Construction officially begins October 29 and is estimated to take approximately four months to complete. A grand opening is planned for early spring 2016.
