Young girl and male, 20, injured in Asbury shooting
Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office will lead investigation
An 8-year-old girl was grazed by a stray bullet during a police-involved shooting along Springwood Avenue Wednesday evening, according to law enforcement.
Those at the scene said the girl was sitting in her home watching television when she was struck by the bullet.
First Assistant Prosecutor Marc LeMieux told NJ.Com the officer involved was Terrance McGhee. News 12 and witnesses at the scene said a 20 year old male was also injured.
McGhee was patrolling the area when he spotted the shooter near Springwood and Atkins avenues, LeMieux said. When McGhee approached, he noticed the suspect had a gun. He took flight on foot, heading west on Springwood toward Avenue A.
LeMieux said the suspect fired a 9-mm semi-automatic Smith and Wesson before McGhee returned fire. The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Although McGhee was unhurt, he was hospitalized as part of the procedural process surrounding an officer being involved in a shooting.
It is unclear who shot the 8-year-old child but she was treated and released form an area hospital.
The injured man’s family reported that he was walking to a neighborhood deli when the incident occurred.
Neighborhood resident Malik Davis said he heard the barrage of gunfire but waited until he heard the police sirens before venturing outside.
“I heard about 8 to 10 shots,” the city resident said. “I came out onto Borden Avenue and saw the young lady holding her baby and then someone said [the suspect] was on Springwood. I ran over there.”
Law enforcement roped off Springwood Avenue and Atkins west to Springwood and Dewitt.
Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the city’s fire and first aid squad, and neighboring police departments were at the scene. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s office will lead the investigation.
