School district hosts college and career ready symposium
Steve Perry, Mikki Taylor, & Deborah Tillman join discussion
Experts, both local and those that are a part of the national landscape, will join in a week long symposium aimed at widening the job and educational opportunities for Asbury Park’s students, according to a news release.
Presented by the school district’s College and Career Readiness Institute, the ‘Saving Our Students’ symposium kicks Monday and runs through Dec. 4 at the Asbury Park High School.
The culminating event will be a 6 p.m. panel discussion Dec. 3 featuring CNN contributor Dr. Steve Perry, Essence magazine Editor-at-Large Mikki Taylor, and parenting expert Dr. Deborah Tillman.
Perry specializes in addressing social issues that aim to build up individuals and a community; Taylor’s “Mastering Your Truth with Distinction” addresses empowerment, branding, beauty and self-image; and, Tillman’s “There is a Purpose for Parenting” focuses on family empowerment and improving community engagement.
Launched this past year, the College and Career Readiness Institute is designed to groom students for their post-secondary education and careers.
The remainder of the ‘Saving or Students’ symposium is open to students only. The lectures include:
• “My Journey to Success,” by Keith Manning, CEO of Manning Enterprise and the owner and operator of McDonald’s franchises, held at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30
• Four-time Olympian Joetta Clark Diggs will be discussing how good health and positive work ethics are associated with participation in sports at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1.
• Community activist Tyrone Laws will present “Understanding and Respecting Your Culture” at 9 am. Wednesday, Dec. 2.
• Tia Johnson, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Legislative Affairs will share her Journey to Success during a 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. lecture Friday, Dec. 4.
