Sprockets Brings Computer Coding to Hope Academy
Lakehouse/Cowerks STEM program open to ages 7 to 12
Sprockets, a computer science coding program developed by Lakehouse and Cowerks founders is now being offered to student at Hope Academy Charter School.
The success of a series of kids coding events held last winter led to the computer science curriculum aimed at growing kids’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math [STEM], organizers said.
“Everyone should have at least some exposure to the language of code,” Cowerks’ Bret Morgan said. “It’s part of being a well-rounded individual. Just as you might learn a foreign language or read the classics, you will find computer programming helps in all sorts of job fields.
The course will be administered by Robin Bhattacharyya, an entrepreneur who founded Carponents.com. A member of the Cowerks community, Bhattacharyya completed Code.org teacher training program.
“It’s important to give kids exposure to opportunities and experiences they might not otherwise pursue on their own,” Bhattacharyya said. “Put a group of kids in a room after school and tell them it’s time for a science lesson, you are met with groans and eye rolls. But once we really dive into the material and start some of the hands on activities– building and flying paper airplanes– they realize that it is actually much more fun and creative than expected.”
The 12-week after school program is being offered to children ages 7-12. Organizers say they hope to bring the program to other area schools.
