Yard Dogs Documentary exclusively at ShowRoom
Juicy Jenn Movie Club premiere screening at 10 p.m. Saturday
The narrative behind how a collaborative group of poets and musicians turned a pile of puppets into an international touring cabaret is unveiled in The Yard Dogs Road Show documentary, being screened Saturday at The ShowRoom Cinema on Cookman Avenue.
The local viewing serves as the kick off for the Juicy Jenn Movie Club, a collection of eclectic films screened exclusively at The ShowRoom.
Organizer Jenn Hampton of Parlor Gallery wrote on her social media page: “Saturday night, ladies and gentlemen, is the opening night of the Juicy Jenn Movie Club at The ShowRoom, and the first film is a lovely one indeed, Yard Dogs Road Show, featuring an appearance by our very own Asbury Lanes.”
Hampton, the former Asbury Lanes Manager, will offer regular and VIP tickets for the screenings, held in the ShowRoom Lounge.
The Yard Dogs was a returning member of the Asbury Lanes billing over the years and the film features a cameo at the Fourth Avenue venue, now under construction.
The documentary is a collaborative between Yard Dogs founding members Eddy Cotton [Zebu Recchia] and Flecher Fleudujon. Not available online or by DVD, the film is making its New Jersey debut at The ShowRoom.
The Yard Dogs sprung from the late 1990s traveling jug band collaboration between Cotton [a writer], Fleudujon [a filmmaker], and poet Miquel Strong. The trio played road houses and dance halls along the West Coast, traveling in a 1967 Ford Galaxy 500. It was a sleepover at a place called Dog Creek Road along Interstate 5 that inspired their name, according to the troupe’s website.
The troupe attracted like-minded creative performers with the shared edict of living an independent lifestyle.
Today they offer everything from vaudeville, burlesque and stage magic to sideshow oddities, song and dance numbers, and beatnik ‘hobo poetry.’ Performers include sword-swallower and magician Tobias the Mystic Man, spandex donning Guitar Boy, musclebound fire-eater Hellvis, and the Black and Blue Burlesque dancing girls.
The film will be screened at 10 p.m. Saturday at The ShowRoom Cinema, located at 707 Cookman Ave. General admission tickets are $10, available at the door or on the ShowRoom’s website. The VIP Lounge tickets are $20 and includes refreshments.
