School District hosts Summer Awakening Fashion Show
High School Students model Lord & Taylor and their own designs
Asbury Park School District Fashion and Art high school students will host their annual Summer Awakening Fashion Show 7 p.m. Thursday at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel.
Pairing their own creations with the latest trends provided by Lord & Taylor department store, the event is a behind the scenes experience for students interested in the fashion industry.
“The annual fashion show is a great opportunity for students to learn about the business of fashion,” explains Fashion and Art instructor Jean Johnson. “Students learn and participate in all aspects of creating and coordinating a professional special event fashion show. New this year is the dual credit program with Brookdale Community College, so we have a variety of upscale student designed and sewn fashions on view and modeled for attendees.”
Dubbed ‘Summer Awakening,’ the fashion show features ensembles for everything from job interviews to formal summer parties and casual styles.
Students also learn the value of giving back.
This year they chose the Wonder Bar Yappy Hour Local Relief and the Asbury Park Boardwalk Rescue as benefactors, who help abandoned and abused dogs and cats. Attendees are asked to bring nonperishable cat and/or dog food items, dog biscuits, kitty litter, pet waste bags and pet supplies for entrance to the event.
“The students are excited to show the community the effort and hard work they put forth in the APHS and Brookdale Community College Dual Credit fashion programs,” said Principal Reginald Mirthil. “The fashion programs offer a multitude of student learning opportunities about fashion design, business and industry; as well as college credit for the Brookdale credit classes.”
Summer Awakening begins at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, 1401 Ocean Ave.
