Stingray spotting prompts evacuation of water
Lifeguards say rays should be gone by tomorrow
By Molly Mulshine
Loch Arbour lifeguards ordered swimmers out of the water when they spotted a pod of stingrays offshore at about 3:15 p.m. today.
The rays were spotted inside the swimming section at the Loch Arbour Beach Club, head lifeguard John Bosmans said. Lifeguards took a kayak to investigate, then ordered the 30 to 40 swimmers to evacuate the water.
Stingrays are not often spotted in Loch Arbour, Bosmans said. He only recalled seeing them once last summer.
The stingrays were still present before the beach closed today, but Bosmans said the water should be open for swimming again tomorrow morning.
