Serving as a qualifier for the Special Olympics of New Jersey, the Fifth Annual One More sporting competition returns to Asbury Park Sunday.

The event features a triathlon, duathlon and aquavelo races open to athletes of all skill levels in order to foster understanding, acceptance, and friendship, organizers said.

Kicking off at 8 a.m. from Convention Hall, participants will run, swim and ride along the city’s boardwalk, beaches and Ocean Avenue.

The One More triathlon is a .25 mile ocean swim, 12 mile bike and 3 mile run. The duathlon is a 1mile run, 12 mile bike and 3 mile run. And, the aquavelo competition is a .25 mile ocean swim and 12 mile bike race.

The games serve as a fundraising endeavor, hosted by Eneractive Solutions in conjunction with M&T Bank in support of the Special Olympics New Jersey [SONJ].

One More Tri became the state’s first officially sanctioned Special Olympics triathlon last year, the first time the games were held in Asbury Park. Special Olympic hopefuls compete individually or as part of a unified relay teams.

Last year 13 individual athletes, five unified relays [2 athletes and a unified partner], and four individual athletes from the Special Olympics Virginia team raced shoulder to shoulder with One More Tri competitors, officials said.

The triathlon was introduced as a Special Olympics demonstration sport at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, held in central New Jersey. The next Special Olympics

USA Games will be held in Seattle in summer 2018.
