Vote Drives And Candidates Forum Ahead
City Council incumbents Asbury Together challenged by Citizens for Asbury Ticket
The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 8 election is Tuesday.
To help residents ensure they are qualified to cast their ballots in not only the national, state and county races but the City Council race that could result in a shift in majority, the local Democratic Organization is hosting two additional vote drives.
Voters will cast ballots for three candidates vying for three City Council seats. Incumbent ticket Asbury Together is being challenged by the Citizens for Asbury Park ticket.
The Asbury Together incumbent ticket comprised of Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn and Council Members Yvonne Clayton and Eileen Chapman [shown below left, respectively] are being challenged by the Citizens For Asbury Park ticket made up of Zoning Board member Daniel Harris, and Board of Education members Stephen Williams and Kenneth Saunders, Jr [shown below right, respectively].
“If you have not yet registered to vote, have recently moved to a new address, changed your name, or do not know if you are registered to vote, this is your chance to register to vote for the November 8th local and national elections,” Chairman Giuseppe Grillo said.
Grillo said the second of three drives will held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Main Street, directly next to the city’s transportation center. The first Vote Drive was held Wednesday at Watermark.
The Bus for Progress also will be driving to several locations throughout the city to register voters.
Gathering at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, volunteers can hop on the Bus at Main Street and Cookman Avenue as they set off to register voters throughout city neighborhoods. Others volunteers will set up tables in key locations throughout the city to register citizens walking by, organizers said.
Late volunteers need not worry, just head to the Main Street location near the train station and you will be directed to where your help will be most needed. Organizers will train those who have never registered voters before and if you have small table, chair and clipboard at your disposal, bring it along.

A third Vote Drive will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at a location to be determined, Grillo said.
Eligible voters must be:
A United States citizen
At least 17 years old, and understand that you may not vote until reaching the age of 18.
A resident of the county for 30 days before the election
You are NOT currently serving a sentence, probation or parole because of a felony conviction
Vote by Mail applications will also be on hand, Grillo said.
For those interested in learning more about the candidates seeking a seat on the City Council, there will be an APTV hosted public forum beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday [doors open at 6:30 p.m.] at the House of Independents, located at 572 Cookman Ave.
The grassroots Asbury Park Complete Streets Coalition has posed a list of seven questions to each of the six candidates, which will be published following the Oct. 18 deadline.
Lastly, the Asbury Park Homeowner’s Association will host a 10 a.m. to noon Meet the Candidates forum at The Asbury, located at 210 Fifth Ave. For more information, email APHA1205@gmail.com or visit aphomeowners.org.
