Update: Suspicious Package found contained DJ Speaker
Roadway Closure, State Bomb Squad and County K9 response a part of hour long investigation
A suspicious black duffle bag found along Norwood Avenue Wednesday afternoon proved to be no threat to the community, Deal Police Department spokesman Sgt. Brian Egan said.
After an over hour-long investigation that resulted in a portion of the roadway being closed to traffic and response by the State Police Bomb Squad Unit, the package was found to contain a black DJ speaker.
“We think it might have rolled off the back of a vehicle,” Egan said.
A motorist found the bag near 1:35 p.m. at the intersection of Brighton and Norwood avenues. He was attempting to bring it to police headquarters but opted to call for assistance after smelling a strong fuel odor, Egan said.
Police responded to Norwood and Lehman avenues, and closed the roadway between Brighton and Roseld avenues as a precaution.
Due to the size of the bag, the location, and the odor, the State Police Bomb Squad Unit was called in to assist with the investigation, he said. Other responders included Monmouth County Bomb Detection Dogs, and Deal Fire and First Aid squads.
The investigation was led by Sgt. Hulse, with assistance by Patrol Officers Volek, Ammaturo, Liptak, and Medina.
“We want to remind the public to never approach or try to handle a suspicious package,” Egan said. “They should always call the police department for assistance.”
