Mary’s Place By The Sea Honors Community Leaders
Third Annual Oceanfront Bash 6 p.m. Friday at Buona Sera Palazzo
Neptune based oncologist Dr. Denise Johnson Miller will receive the Healthcare Hero Award during Friday’s Third Annual Oceanfront Bash in support of Mary’s Place by the Sea.
“Having such a highly innovative and respected doctor support Mary’s Place and believe in our mission gives us validation to keep going,” Mary’s Place Cofounder Michele Gannon said of Miller [shown at right]. “Her patients are our guests so we hear first hand how she takes personal care and approaches every patient with an open heart. We are honoring her with the award this year because we want her to know the difference she is making in the cancer community.”
The Congressional Award winner is a Jersey Shore University Medical Center affiliated surgeon who received her medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She has been in practice for more than 20 years.
“There’s the physical healing but then there is the healing that needs to come from the psychological trauma of being diagnosed with a life-threatening disease,” Miller said.
Miller said Mary’s Place helps women move past the fight or flight mode associated with cancer diagnosis and treatments by calming stresses and thereby allowing the immune system to work.
“Our patients who go there come back revived,” she said. “They come back with a new lease on life.”
The nonprofit’s fundraising event, held 6 p.m. at Buona Sera Palazzo in Ocean Township, features cocktail style dining and an open bar, music and dancing, and a gift auction. Tickets are $200.
The Mumford family will receive the organization’s Community Pioneer Heroes Award, Asbury Park Press President and Publisher Tom Donovan will receive the Humanitarian Award, and Bobby Bandiera and Friends will receive the Hope Heroes Award.
