iStar Launches Construction Workforce Development
Sordoni Construction administers program aimed at employing local trade professionals
In an unprecedented move, waterfront redeveloper iStar will launch a construction industry workforce development program next week.
Aimed at including local contractors in the work needed to build the 1101 Ocean Avenue project at the failed Esperanza site [shown in feature photo], iStar will host an open bid event from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at The Asbury – their hotel and entertainment venue that opened this summer [shown below].
iStar helped develop the Salt School, a hospitality training conducted by hotelier David Bowd prior to Fifth Avenue venue’s opening. While there was total of over 300 applicants, 150 candidates were chosen, and of the 110 graduates, 60 were chosen for employ.
The workforce development initiative was among those the Asbury Park City Council asked developers, particular those with or seeking tax abatement or payment in lieu of taxes [PILOT], to include in their project development plans.
iStar has named Sordoni Construction Company of Bedminster Township as the lead contractor, who will oversee construction management of the 16-story mixed use structure designed by Gary Handel of Handel Architects. The building will feature a boutique hotel, ground floor retail, outdoor entertainment venues, and luxury homes [shown at right].
The open bid event will give local contractors an opportunity to meet with Sordoni representatives to discuss the project needs, and will be open to all Asbury Park and Monmouth County construction trade and related subcontractors, vendors, MBE and WBE firms.
Bid prequalification will be available at the event, as well as employment application for any individual tradesperson interested in working on the project through a mentorship program.
The trade’s of interest include but are not limited to:
Masonry/CMU; Roofing; Miscellaneous Metals; Glass and Glazing; Plumbing Fixture Installation; Millwork; Painting and Wallcovering; Door, Frames and Hardware installation; Hardscape and Landscaping; Appliances; Flooring; Window Cleaning; Final Project Cleaning; Signage; Caterers; Individual Laborers; Office Supplies; and Dumpster Service.
