Love on Wheels Valentine’s Weekend At Convention Hall
Asbury Park students skate free; DJ Atom Worth sets Roller Boogie scene and Can't Buy Me Love Market Planned
Skateboarding returned to Asbury Park’s waterfront this past year and on Saturday ice skating returns via The Asbury on Fifth Avenue. If you’re wondering what’s next – try roller skating inside the iconic Convention Hall, located at 1300 Ocean Ave.
Next month, boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette will unveil a Valentine’s weekend lineup that features a roller hall in the ilk of the flamboyant ’70s roller disco craze.
The new pop-up is “promises to be a soulful Valentine jam,” spokesman Adam Nelson tells the Sun. “It’ll be a time machine to Xanadu; to relive the funky disco days of tube socks and spandex while catching boogie fever. It’s a love on wheels Valentine’s weekend.”
Featured DJ Atom Worth said he’s planning to model the music and atmosphere after the late ‘70s to early ‘80s roller boogie scene.
“Back in the day on Friday and Saturday nights, the roller rinks would become more of a disco, night club atmosphere, and dancing became a part of the skating,” Worth said. “Funk/Disco captures it great but into the early 80’s the music at roller rinks was more funky 80’s R&B and 80’s pop and rock, so I plan to sort of go on that whole journey musically as well through the night, with some room for improv.”
Worth said there’ll be relevant visuals and music videos to capture the Roller Boogie craze.
Tickets are now on sale for the two-day Roller Hall pop up events, running Feb 11 and 12.
The Roller Hall will feature food, drinks, music, and games. Each spin session lasts 1 hour and 15 minute, with doors open 15 minutes prior. Because skate rentals will be limited, participants must reserve in advance via EventBrite here. Bring your own skates will be welcome for both quad and inline skaters, Nelson said.
Sessions will be broken down via soundtrack classics, like Kids Disco Mix or Madonna and Donna Summer hours. There’s also a couples skate, backward skate, disco mix and boogie nights on the lineup.
Nelson said night skaters are encouraged to dress in their best spandex, Lycra, velour, and synthetic polyester.
And at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. and noon, slots will be reserved for Asbury Park students to skate free, Nelson said. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone ages 16 and under.
From noon to 6 p.m. on both days, Can’t Buy Me Love – a Valentine’s Market will held inside the Grand Arcade. A collaboration from The Asbury Park Bazaar and The Market, vendors will offer gifts for her and him, flowers, and chocolates & treats. In true pop-up market style, there will workshops and Hey Bulldog – A Tribute to the Beatles.
The Roller Hall hours will be 2 p.m. to 1 a.m. Feb. 11 and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Feb 12.
