Teens Burned While Igniting Fire Pit With Gasoline
Two 18-yr-olds males rushed to hospitals after setting off explosive blaze
Two 18-year-old men were rushed to hospitals after attempting to ignite a fire inside a fire pit, Ocean Township Police Department announced Thursday night.
Officers, responding to a 6:22 p.m. reported fire in a wooded area between Fairway Lane and Weston Avenue, discovered the the blaze originated from a fire pit in the rear of a Weston Avenue home, according to a news release.
The two unidentified 18-year-olds were burned from the pit’s flames, one with significant burns to his face chest and hands. He was treated at the scene by the Wanamassa First Aid before being airlifted to the Burn Center at St. Barnabas in Livingston.
The second male sustained lesser injuries and was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for further treatment.
An investigation led by Det Jesse Orbach revealed that one of the men used gasoline to start the fire, which sparked in an explosive manner.
Ocean Township Fire District No. 2 Fire Marshal’s Office and the Monmouth County Fire Marshal’s Office responded, as well as Ocean Police Officers Steven Walker, Trevor Dickerson, Casey Larrison, Timothy Kolodziej, Christopher Stenger, Detectives Orbach and Gregory Martone, and Sgt. Timothy Macom.
