Deal Police Announce Distracted Driver Crackdown
Motorists On Handheld Cell Calls and Texting Targeted Through April 21
The Deal Police Department has announced that a distracted driving crackdown campaign will begin April 1.
A part of New Jersey’s UDrive. UText. UPay. initiative, the campaign will target motorists seen engaging in illegal dangerous distracted driving behaviors like talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving, officials said in a written statement.
“Distracted driving is a serious issue on our roadways,” New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety Acting Director Gary Poedubicky said. “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2014 alone, 3,179 people were killed in distracted driving crashes and an estimated 431,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver.”
Despite existing laws, 67 percent of respondents to an FDU PublicMind Poll said they “very often” see people driving and talking on a hand held cell phone; and 42 percent said they “very often” see driver’s texting.
The campaign, running through April 21, is being held in recognition of the National Safety Council’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Its parameters fall in line with the Click It or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over initiatives.
