Boys & Girls Club reduces summer services
Some programs to continue over next three weeks
The Asbury Park Boys and Girls Club’s summer camp is closing three weeks early this year, but officials from the organization say some summer programs will continue and the club as a whole is on steady financial footing.
“In order to ensure the long-term stability of the organization, we’ve had to make short-term decisions, such as ending summer camp early,” said executive director Doug Eagles in an email. “Our child-care program will remain open for those parents who really depend on us, and regular programming will begin on Sept. 5.”
The Boys & Girls Club runs several programs during the summer and throughout the year at its Monroe Avenue chapter. The child-care program is year-round and costs $60 per week, per child, with a $10 discount for each additional sibling. That program will remain open, despite the summer camp program’s early ending.
The camp bears the same price as the child-care program but only takes place in the summer months.
The drop-in fall programs begin Sept. 5 this year, from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and costs $10 per child for annual school-year membership, while the child-care program continues.
Despite the early closure of camp, the Boys & Girls Club will offer additional programming for campers all month, including a four-day music camp with Asbury Park Middle School students; a performing arts camp held each Tuesday; a back-to-school fashion show at Monmouth Mall; and a talent show and dance performance at the Asbury Park Labor Day BBQ in Bradley Park.
The early closure will free up funds for the club’s fall activities, which start in September.
