Sammy Steinlight was on hand to capture Bruce Springsteen’s surprise appearance Friday night during the Upstage All-Stars Jam at the Paramount Theatre on Asbury Park’s boardwalk.

The jam session was held in conjunction with the Asbury Park Music & Film Festival screening of “Just Before Dawn,” directed by Tom Jones. The documentary spotlights the history and importance of the Upstage, a late night jam venue that stayed open until 5 a.m. throughout the late 1960s to early 1970s.

Springsteen, Stevie Van Zandt, Southside Johnny, David Sancious, Ernest “Boom” Carter and Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez, and others.
