Bike Pledge
Stringbean and the Boardwalk Social Club are in full swing back 6 p.m. Mondays at the Asbury Park Yacht Club, 1000 Ocean Ave. Returning for their 7th year playing on the boardwalk, the band has pledged to ride bikes to every one of their regular local gigs, which drummer Sweet Joey says is 4 per week. “It’s in an effort to promote bicycle advocacy, safety, awareness, not having to deal with parking in the summer, promoting health, not to mention just plain having fun,” he said. “We are encouraging people to ride to the gigs, we are documenting it in video form. The band has released Bike Riddim via Spotify, Itunes, etc, an anthem about bicycling that will played at every gig.
Join the Asbury Park School District’s mission to construct a Literacy Lab at Abrem Agona in Ghana during this fundraising event from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at The House of Independents, 572 Cookman Ave. A part of their ongoing relationship with the Ghanaian school, the event features a collection of photo images taken while Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School students visited Ghana during the April spring break. The evening also includes a video presentation of the Ghana trip, a student presentation, and the sale of not only the photo prints, but authentic African hand carvings, jewelry, dresses, wraps, shirts, and handbags. Admission is free and complimentary light refreshments will be served.
