Pulse Memorial Events Planned
Asbury Park Community Organizes To Pay Homage To 49 Victims
Hotel Tides Manager Ryan Jimenez is among the organizers of a Pulse Remembrance Gathering being held 7 p.m. June 12 in Library Square Park.
“In the wake of one of America’s worst tragedies, the Asbury Park LGBT community came together to plant 49 trees in Library Square Park in remembrance of our fallen brothers and sisters,” Jimenez said in a written email. “On this day, one year later we will gather to show our love, support and demonstrate how strong our community can be.”
The event’s guest speakers will include: Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn; Christian Fuscarino, Executive Director of Garden State Equality; Luanne Peterpaul, an activist, writer, attorney and member of the board of directors for Garden State Equality.
The City’s Environmental Shade and Tree Committee continue to maintain and beautify the area, Jimenez said.
The Orlando Memorial Grove Plaque reads in part: ‘May love, tolerance, and compassion bloom in this garden and spread throughout this community and our world.’
On Friday, Project REAL hosts a Pulse Remembrance benefit show featuring Avery Mandeville and the Man Devils, Overmind, Des & the Swagmatics, and The Shady Street Show Band at Georgies (815 Fifth Ave).
Running from 6 to midnight, there’s also a full drag show, local vendors selling a variety of art and merchandise, raffles, and informative materials from places like The Trevor Project, Food Not Bombs, ACT UP, Trans Lifeline, and others.
The suggested donation is $5, with 100 percent of the proceeds from the door and raffles supporting the charitable organization. For more info, visit the Facebook event page.
