Asbury Park Mayor Joins National Climate Change Pledge
Moor Added to 350 US Mayors Adopting Paris Agreement Standards
Mayor John Moor has pledged the city’s inclusion in the growing Mayors National Climate Action Agenda, also known as the US Climate Mayors.
“Asbury Park is a beach town, and one that has already felt the impact of climate change through increasingly destructive storms and shifts in weather patterns” Moor said in a written statement. “It’s necessary for all communities around the world to think seriously about what can be done to protect our planet, but it’s an immediate concern for cities like ours.”
Over 350 mayors have joined the Climate Mayors agreement, including those from the 10 largest cities in country. The group pledges to adopt, honor, and uphold the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
“I’m proud to put my name and the name of Asbury Park to this pledge, a sign of our commitment to do whatever we can to cut emissions, promote clean energy, and consider the environment as an essential part of our policies as a governing body,” Moor said.
The Climate Mayors action group was founded by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, and former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, city officials said.
The need for this coalition of Mayors was made evident in June 2017, when President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, an international set of guidelines aiming to control rising global temperatures into the 2020s.
Despite the withdrawal, a growing number of mayors believe positive change can be made at the state and municipal level, with respect to clean energy, sustainability, and related concerns.
The written pledge identifies the need to “intensify efforts to meet each of our cities’ current climate goals, push for new action to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target, and work together to create a 21st century clean energy economy.”
The mayors agree to buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks; increase efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions; create a clean energy economy; and stand for environmental justice.
“We’ll build and strengthen relationships around the world to protect the planet from devastating climate risks,” the pledge reads in part.
