Arrest made in High Voltage Cafe Burglary
Deputy Chief Kelso: cafe owner had locator application on stolen iPad
High Voltage Café is the latest victim in a spate of burglaries occurring in Asbury Park.
Officers were called to the Asbury Park boardwalk venue, located at 800 Ocean Ave, near 6:27 a.m. Wednesday, Asbury Park Police Department Spokesman Sgt. Michael Casey said.
“Entry was gained through a broken glass door on the boardwalk,” Casey said. “The owner reported an iPad valued at $700 and $300 in cash and chocolate bars stolen.”
Through an investigation by the responding officers and detectives, the iPad was tracked to an address in Ocean Township. A consent to search was provided by the homeowner and the iPad was located, Casey said.
Deputy Chief David Kelso said the cafe owner had a locator application on the iPad which led Asbury Park Police Officers and Detectives to a Bauer Avenue home.
The homeowner stated that Ernest Lathom, 39, was staying at the house. The stolen iPad was located in Lathom’s room.
Lathom was located by the beach and placed under arrest. He was charged with burglary and theft, and remanded to Monmouth County Jail, pending a court future court appearance.
Detective Darrius Davis conducted an investigation by obtaining the surveillance video and taking a formal video statement from Lathom, Casey said.
Kelso said the iPad was returned to the cafe owner.
The arrest is the fifth made in conjunction to nine burglaries across the city since Aug 12. Others include break-in and thefts at the Bangs Avenue garage and to vehicles within the parking structure and at another parking lot, at Booskerdoo Coffee and Baking Co on Memorial Drive, and at a Main Street furniture store.
