Traffic stop leads to drug and gun possession charges
Long Branch man, 26, w/ loaded hand gun remanded to County Jail
A motor vehicle stop Wednesday led to the gun and drug possession arrest of a Long Branch, Deal Police Department officials announced in a written news statement.
Jamaal Covin, 26, of Long Branch was charged with two counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of controlled dangerous substances, possession of controlled dangerous substances with intent to distribute, three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of controlled dangerous substances in a motor vehicle, failure to maintain lane, and having unclear plates.
Officials said Covin was observed committing a traffic violation along Norwood Avenue near 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, and was subsequently stopped near the area of the Elberon train station. An investigation revealed Covin was in possession of a loaded handgun, controlled dangerous substances and drug paraphernalia.
In accordance with bail reform guidelines, Covin was remanded to Monmouth County Jail, pending court date.
Patrolmen Miguel Medina, Dave Talty, Dan Lokerson, and K-9 Atok investigated.
