Installation of about 20 bike racks in the downtown area began today on Cookman Avenue.

About 10 racks were installed today and the rest should be in place by the end of the week. Each rack installed today has a sign advising cyclists to wait until tomorrow, Sept. 12, to use them so the concrete at the base can dry. The racks should fit up to four bicycles each.

Chamber of Commerce executive director Jackie Pappas helped pick out and plan the placement of the bike racks, she said, and they were purchased using urban enterprise zone [UEZ] funding.

Pappas hopes the city will expand on the program soon, possibly with sponsorships from businesses and “more artistic” racks, she has said.

“I think it will be really nice during the fall season,” Pappas said recently. “People will really be encouraged to take bikes into the city.”
