NO Starving Artists Auction Returns Sunday
Hotel Tides Hosts Open Bid Event Showcasing 14 Visual Artists
Over 60 pieces of art will land on the No Starving Artist Auction block Sunday at the Hotel Tides on Seventh Avenue in Asbury Park.
“If you’re looking for a special gift, or just need a special piece for a room in your house, this is the place to be,” says Ellen Martin, the annual event’s founder and curator.
The auction is a terrific opportunity for collectors, art lovers and gallery owners to easily view a large number of works, meet dedicated groups of artists, and acquire pieces.
Held in conjunction with Martin’s Jersey Artist Registry, this year’s auction will showcase 14 Jersey artists – Tim Aanensen, Marilyn Baldi, Dawn DiCicco, Shoshana Kertesz, Colleen Lineberry, Carol Magnatta, Ellen Martin, Amy Puccio, Stacey As Pritchard, Jane Proulx, Sharon Sayegh, Linda Schwartz, Sandy Taylor, and Karen Starrett.
“I started the Jersey Artist Registry [JAR], an online gallery, in 2013 because I enjoy providing opportunities for artists in New Jersey,” Martin said. “There are other registries around, but some are hard to find and/or limit the number of images an artist can show. The JAR is easy to use, easy to find, and chock full of images.”
The auction will feature paintings in oil, acrylic, and cold wax; photography in both color, and black and white; wood mosaic wall sculptures and monotypes, Martin said. All proceeds will go directly to the artist.
“Many artists are starving or not making a living with their art for many reasons, so I’m doing my little bit to reverse that trend by providing a commission-free event,” Martin said. “Instead of the 50 percent commission that would go to a commercial gallery, I just ask for a $20 admin fee to cover expenses. Ryan Jimenez, the General Manager of the Hotel Tides, has also agreed to forego his commission.”
“I also want to help reverse the trend of organizations asking artists to work or donate their work for nothing,” Martin said. “Although I’m going to the other extreme of giving everything to the artist, I actually hope there can be a middle ground of creating a commission split that is fair to both parties.”
The auction will stream live via Facebook. Those who cannot attend but want to place bids can call 703-868-2833, or 732-216-5039. Auctions sheets are available for download via the Facebook site.
A preview of the art will be from 2 to 3 p.m. and the auction run from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at The Hotel Tides, located at 408 7th Ave. Free street parking is available near the hotel and the event also features a cash bar for food and drinks.
Admission is free and open to the public. To preview of the work before the auction, visit the Facebook page.
