Asbury Park Issues Road Closing & Detour Alert
Water/Sewer Replacement & Milling/Paving Work Continues
Road repairs have caused the need for closures and detours along city streets this week, City officials announced Tuesday.
The Asbury Park Police Department issued a notice alerting motorists to take note of the changes, which include:
An 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fourth Avenue closure, west of Memorial Drive and Sunset Avenue and west of Memorial Drive.
Periodic detours will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. along the County-owned Asbury Avenue west of Memorial Drive. Curb work is being done by the County.
There will also be road closure and detours from 8 p.m to 6 a.m. along Main Street for the ongoing Main Street Road Diet preparation.
And, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m road closures and detours continue along Main Street as the State DOT finishes pipe replacement and readies for the Main Street Road Diet implementation. The Main Street Road Diet work is expected to begin in the spring.
The Department of Transportation mandated that the Springwood Avenue and Main Street [above right] crossing sanitary sewer replacement be done on a continual 24 hour basis until the work is complete. The 75 foot long intersection work must be complete by Jan. 1 in order for the Main Street Road Diet plans to move forward.
The work includes the jack and bore method of construction, meaning two horizontal access points are created in order to pass the new line to pass through without disturbing what is above.
Once complete the sanitary sewer upgrade continues through to Memorial Drive. The Springwood Avenue rail crossing work is expected to be complete by February’s end.
Smaller sewer lines reflected on plans dating back over 10 years need to be replaced, especially in light of the pending the pending Boston Way, Renaissance, and Interfaith Neighbors residential projects set to come online in the next 1½ years.
Other repairs include the soon to be paving completion along Sunset Avenue. Once complete, paving will begin along Webb Street.
New Jersey American Water will foot the bill for milling and paving work along Bridge Street between Fifth and Sunset avenues; half of Locust Drive, all of Jeffrey Street between Locust and Fifth Avenue and half of Fifth between Bridge and Locust. The utility has been replacing storm sewers, curbs and handicapped ramps.
