‘The wheels of change and progress are turning’

For years, amusements and Asbury Park were synonymous. The ferris wheel at Palace Amusements, the carousel at the Casino. Those types of cultural fixtures are no longer a permanent presence in the city. But a few times a year in the spring and summer, a traveling carnival makes its way into town.

Ocean Grove resident Robert Burns captured this scene in late spring.

Burns tells Asbury Park Sun, “I come from a family of photographers. I’ve been clickin’ since I was about 7.”

“I took this pic the Thursday before Bamboozle started while it was still quiet. It’s in front of the Berkley-Carteret. I felt inspired by the spokes and how the wheels of change and progress are turning in Asbury Park. A town that holds many fond childhood memories of the motor boats, swan boats and amusements. Hours spent playing pin-ball and the great concert scene in the late ’60s and early ’70s.”
