AP Women’s Convention Out Grows Planned Venue
A Day of Politics And Comedy Will Be Held Feb 24 At the Paramount Theatre
In less than two days after announcing the inaugural Asbury Park Women’s Convention [APWC] would be held Feb 24 at The Asbury, organizers sold out. Coupled as an educational and entertaining forum, the 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. event has been moved to the historic Paramount Theatre on the Asbury Park Boardwalk.
“We feel so lucky to have the support of our community, especially The Asbury hotel, who were behind us the minute we mentioned the idea, and to Madison Marquette for stepping up when the response was overwhelming,” Asbury Park’s Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn said. “One of our goals is tapping into the voices of millennial women since they are going to be the ones who shape the future of this country.”
Quinn joins Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton; Comedian/Activist Jess Alaimo, who helped organize the Labor Day Stand Against Hate rally in Springwood Avenue Park; Community Organizer Kerry Margaret Butch, who served as Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey; and Jersey Pride Organizer Linda Phillips in organizing the nonpartisan event.
“I think the fact that we sold out of tickets in less than two days is indicative of where we’re at as a society,” Alaimo said. “Women are ready to stand up for equality and to fight for justice. This event will give us the confidence and guidance necessary to move forward fearlessly in these endeavors.”
The event aims to address issues that affect women across party lines in an engaging and realistic manner, according to a written news statement. The APWC will address issues such as: Equal Pay, Women’s Healthcare and Sexual Violence.
“There are a myriad of issues that affect us and it is time we determine our destinies,” Clayton said. “That is the impetus behind the Asbury Park Women’s Conference. And while we are discussing the heavy issues, we are also going to make sure we have fun.”
The daylong event includes performances by not only well-known comedians but also local bands and appearances by a host of political players. Breakfast and lunch will be available from nearby local venues.
Tickets are $10 online and $15 on the day of the event; and free of charge for students and military members [with I.D.].
The all volunteer event is accepting donations to cover its costs via gofundme.com/apwomensconvention. Check donations can sent via Asbury Park Women’s Convention, PO Box 713, Asbury Park, NJ 07712.
