Wyclef Jean Headlines At Asbury Park Music & Film Festival On April 28
Three-Time GRAMMY® Award Winner Will Play Iconic Stone Pony Stage
NJ Hall of Famer Wyclef Jean will perform during the Annual Asbury Park Music & Film Festival [APMFF], organizers announced Wednesday.
The former Fugees member, who was inducted into the NJ Hall of Fame in 2017, will headline 9:30 pm April 28 at the legendary Stone Pony on Ocean Avenue, according to a written statement. Tickets go on sale 10 a.m. Friday via www.apmff.org.
Proceeds from Jean’s performance at the APMFF will help fund the operation of a new Mobile Recording Studio, which is designed to bring music directly to the kids who need it the most.
“The talent that these kids have is incredible, Jean said in a written statement. “All they need are the right tools. With this studio, I hope that we can provide an outlet where they can let their talent shine. I’m excited for this studio, and even more excited to hear what the young people of Asbury Park come up with.”
The music that Wyclef Jean has written, performed, and produced — both as a solo superstar and as founder and guiding member of the Fugees — has been a consistently powerful, pop cultural force for over two decades, organizers said in the news statement.
In 1996, the Fugees released their groundbreaking album The Score.
As a solo artist, Jean released seven albums that sold close to nine million copies worldwide, including his 1997 debut The Carnival and 2000’s The Eclectic: 2 Sides II a Book.
Jean’s Carnival III: The Fall and Rise of a Refugee was released on Sept. 15, his first in eight years. The album was named one of the 25 Most Anticipated Albums of the fall by Billboard.
In November 2017, Jean released the mixtape ‘Inspired By…’ that pays tribute to the music that inspired him that year. The project received high acclaim from critics and fans alike.
In December, Jean wrote and performed Dimelo with X-Factor winner Rak-Su. The song rose to the top of the UK charts in less than a week.
Jean is the latest heavy hitter to join the APMFF line-up, which includes An Evening with Danny DeVito, being held April 28 at the Paramount Theatre. The evening will feature video vignettes and stories from DeVito’s career integrated with discussion, a Q&A session and other special presentations.
Musical performances Sublime with Rome at Convention Hall on April 28, Gov’t Mule at the Paramount Theatre April 29, and Michael Franti at the Paramount Theatre April 27. Franti’s performance will follow the world premiere screening and a panel discussion on his documentary Stay Human.
The APMFF lineup also includes Built to Spill, North Mississippi Allstars, Low Cut Connie, Bobby Bandiera and Friends, Patrick Davis and His Midnight Choir, Battery Electric, the Kitchen Dwellers, Dark City Strings, Dentist, Beams, Sharkmuffin and the Tangiers Blues Band, who will serve as the opener for Gov’t Mule.
A screening of the Long Strange Trip includes a panel discussion with producers Eric Eisner and Justin Kreutzmann, and Break On Thru: A Celebration of Ray Manzarek and The Doors will premiere during the event.
A full schedule, venue listing and ticket/pass information is available at www.apmff.org.
