District Honors Blue Bishop Athletes At The Asbury
Breech: The event is a great night to honor our outstanding athletes, their coaches and families
The Annual Asbury Park High School Athletic Awards Banquet returned for a second year in a row Monday night to The Asbury, located at 210 Fifth Ave.
Each year, the community gathers to honor the student athlete’s accomplishments. Aside from the Most Valuable Player, there were the Coaches and Senior awards given to those who played football, soccer, cross country, wrestling, basketball, indoor track, softball, baseball, outdoor track, bowling, and cheerleading, nods went to those in the band.
Former WNBA player Kym Hampton, who has administered workshop programs in the district, returned to deliver the keynote address, Board of Education Chair Connie Breech said.
Among this year’s standouts were:
Davensky Joinvilmar, a three time high jump State Champion who will be attending Kean University on a soccer scholarship.
Judex Beauburm, a soccer player who will be attending Rutgers University on a track scholarship.
Jaylen Paige, a State Champion with the football team who was the first wrestler in decades to participate in the NJSIAA Wrestling Championships. The district champion is still undecided about where he will go to college, Breech said.
And then there is freshman Jhamena Range wo was given a special honor for scoring 40 points in one game, Breech said.
And while there are many accolades, trophies and varsity letters given, it is the journey behind winning state championships and having record breaking stats that is celebrated. There are personal testaments to those who persevere by not only overcoming losses and injuries but who also balance work and night classes.
“The event is a great night to honor our outstanding athletes, their coaches and families,” Breech said.
For the second year in a row three local businesses donated their services: The Asbury hosted, the Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten catered the food and Confections of a Rock$tar provided the cake.
