Mr. C’s Beach Bistro plans eventual reopening
Front window smashed by wind, building foundation may be damaged
The landmark Allenhurst restaurant and bar known as Mr. C’s Beach Bistro suffered damage to its front bar area, where the large windows fronting the ocean were smashed when a beam collapsed from the intense wind during Hurrican Sandy.
However, the restaurant area did not suffer significant damage, according to Mr. C’s Karen Marzulli, who owns the establishment with Chic Perotto. But the building’s foundation may be damaged as water flowed underneath the structure during the storm, she said.
The building is owned by the Borough of Allenhurst and is part of the Allenhurst Beach Club complex. Marzulli and Perotto rent from the borough.
Plans are to reopen the bar and restaurant as soon as the building is repaired and any damage to the foundation is fixed, Marzulli said.
“Everyone is on the same page,” she said in reference to the desire of the borough to get the building reopened so Mr. C’s can resume operations.
Currently, no one is allowed in the building as it may not be safe due to the potential damage to the foundation, Marzulli said. The borough has already initiated the process to assess the building so the repairs can move forward, she said.
The Allenhurst board of commissioners had an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the impact of Hurricane Sandy, and all three of the commissioners wanted to rebuild the structure housing Mr. C’s, said commissioner Terrence Boylan.
“We definitely want to rebuild,” Boylan said. “We’re having our engineer take a look at it. I think he was going to call in an architect. We want to start the rebuilding process as soon as feasible.”
