First snowfall of season hits while 730 remain without power
Early snowfall comes 10 days after Hurricane Sandy
Snowfall began earlier this afternoon after a windy and rainy morning due to a nor’easter hitting the region.
The early snowfall is hitting just 10 days after Hurricane Sandy hit the Jersey Shore, leaving many homeless and millions without power. In Asbury Park, 730 Jersey Central Power & Light [JCP&L] customers are still without power, down from a high of 5,821 last week, according to data from FirstEnergy. On Monday, JCP&L projected power to be restored fully in Asbury Park by Saturday.
A council meeting planned for 6 p.m. tonight was cancelled last night, and school is cancelled tomorrow and Friday.
The temperature is forecasted to hover around 36 degrees Fahrenheit for the rest of the day, while wind is projected to stay around 32 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 55 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch are possible.
Tonight, the forecast is for rain and snow, possibly mixed with sleet before 2 a.m., with a low temperature of around 36 degrees. A north wind of 27 to 32 miles per hour is expected to decrease to 21 to 26 miles per hour after midnight, with possible gusts as high as 55 miles per hour. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than half an inch is possible.
Tomorrow, there is a chance of rain and snow showers before noon, followed by a slight chance of rain showers between noon an 3 p.m. and a high near 46 degrees Fahrenheit. The forecast calls for northeast winds from 18 to 22 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 33 miles per hour, and a 50 percent chance of precipitation, with new snow accumulation of less than half an inch possible.
