Retiring Bd of Ed member backs Cook, Grillo and Glassman
Jones: "We can’t slide back to the bad old days of dysfunction and low expectations"
To the Editor, Asbury Park Sun:
After 25 years of service as School Nurse at Thurgood Marshall School and then as a member of the Board of Education, I wanted to tell you that I am retiring from the Asbury Park School District. I am not running for reelection this year to the school board.
We have so much to be proud of. Our schools have made tremendous strides. The graduation rate is up from 49% in 2014 to 85% this year. School suspensions are down 77%. We have more students enrolled than there have been in years.
But I’m not done working for our children whom I have cared for and loved for most of my life. Now it’s my job to support good people who will continue the progress. That’s why I am supporting my fellow Board member Joe Grillo and his running mates Carritta Cook and Wendi Glassman for election to the Board of Education.
My history with Joe Grillo on the board has been excellent. He has grown into a tireless community leader whose head is in the right place — for the children and their families. We need to reelect him to the school board.
And I urge you to elect his running mates — Carritta Cook and Wendi Glassman. Both Carritta and Wendi have the children’s health, well-being, and education as a priority.
Carritta Cook is a medical professional and mom with a child attending Bradley Elementary. She is also working on her degree in Psychology at Brookdale. Wendi Glassman is a financial executive who has handled million-dollar budgets. She knows how to identify waste and invest in our kids.
We can’t slide back to the bad old days of dysfunction and low expectations, when the school board was an embarrassment! Our children have worked so hard and we have come so far to allow that to happen.
We must continue the progress by electing the right people. I hope that you’ll join me in electing Carritta Cook, Joe Grillo, and Wendi Glassman for Asbury Park School Board – Columns 1, 2, & 4 on your mail-in ballot.
Carol B. Jones
Asbury Park resident and member of the Asbury Park Board of Education
