Grillo ticket poised to win at least two of three BOE seats
Wendi Glassman leads Anthony Remy in race for third seat
A Board of Education ticket led by incumbent Giuseppe “Joe” Grillo [center in above photo] appears to have won two of three seats up for grabs, while the final seat may become closer after all ballots are counted.
In the initial votes published on the county clerk’s website, the high vote-getter on Grillo’s ticket was newcomer Carritta Cook [left in above photo] with 1,675 votes. Grillo received 1,474 votes.
The race for the third seat is closer with Grillo’s running mate Wendi Glassman [right in above photo] receiving 1,303. Trailing behind Glassman is Anthony Remy [right] at 1,185 votes. Remy’s running mate, Iman-Mtume Hall, received 985 votes.
These figures are as of early Wednesday, Nov. 4.
These are partial results. The Board of Elections is still counting mail-in ballots received by election day. There are additional categories of ballots that also need to be counted.
In Asbury Park, a total of 4,011 mail-in ballots were received by November 2, the day before the election, according to data provided by the Board of Elections. The report from the county clerk did not specify how many of those ballots have been counted.
In addition to still uncounted mail-in ballots, the following ballots also need to be counted: late mail-in ballots postmarked by election day but received up to seven days later, votes on election machines by eligible disabled voters on election day and provisional ballots. There were 627 provisional ballots cast, according to an unofficial Asbury Park count.
Provisional ballots are counted after all other ballots are counted. Provisional ballots are paper ballots cast by a voter at a polling place on election day which require further verification of the voter’s eligibility to vote.
Examples of those who may cast a provisional ballot are voters who did not receive a mail in ballot or who filled theirs out incorrectly and did return it.
County officials will confirm that person is eligible to vote and then open the ballot for counting. Eligibility standards include whether the voter is registered to vote, they are registered in the municipality where they cast their provisional ballot and they did not send in a mail-in ballot.
