Rent control referendum defeated by nearly 2-1
City Council's newly-enacted rent control ordinance will stay on the books
A referendum on a rent control ordinance sponsored by a group of residents who got enough signatures to get the proposal on the ballot was defeated by a nearly 2-1 margin.
The City Council unanimously enacted their own rent control ordinance on March 10. Had the referendum passed, it would have replaced the council’s rent control plan.
Instead, the referendum was defeated by a 63-36 percentage, according to unofficial returns from the Monmouth County Clerk’s office. The vote was 637 yes and 1104 no. The turnout was 18 percent of registered voters.
The results do not include provisional ballots or vote-by-mail ballots postmarked today and received within the next six days by election officials.
