Langosta Lounge leaves Asbury boardwalk in early February
Deal Lake Bar + Co group to take over with their own new concept
Long-time area restaurateur Marilyn Schlossbach (above) and her husband Scott Szegeski will close their Langosta Lounge on the Asbury boardwalk after 14 years on Saturday, February 4. They plan a three-day celebration at the end with food, music and remembrances.
“We’ve always enjoyed throwing good parties and breaking bread with our community,” Schlossbach said. “As we leave, we are throwing the biggest bash of all with our unwavering commitment to local live music, fun food and beverage.”
BarCo brands — the group the owns and operates Deal Lake Bar + Co in Loch Arbour — will take over Langosta’s boardwalk space on February 5. BarCo will announce their concept for the space after the takeover.
BarCo will also take over Schlossbach’s other spaces in the Langosta boardwalk pavilion: Asbury Park Yacht Club, Pop’s Garage and Salt Water Market.
Schlossbach said that she will now focus her efforts on her Long Branch location, the Whitechapel Projects.
The following is the news release issued by Schlossbach’s restaurant group announcing the closing of Langosta and transfer of the space to BarCo:
After 14 years on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, pioneers of Asbury Park’s restaurant and music scene, Marilyn Schlossbach and Scott Szegeski are leaving the Langosta Lounge pavilion. They began a journey with her brother Richard at a time when Asbury was struggling to find its voice. Their surf bar, vacation cuisine, authentic mexican restaurant, wine shop and community outreach will be greatly missed on the Asbury Park boardwalk.
Marilyn reflects on the bittersweet parting as she plans to sink her unique energy into the Long Branch community. Marilyn bought in as operating partner of Whitechapel Projects with Preston Casertano and Kurt Cavano just before the pandemic hit, but hasn’t fully been able to create the magic she is capable of because of the sheer size and demands of the Asbury Park restaurants and bars.
“I couldn’t ask for a better office and a better team”, Marilyn said as she reminisced of the camaraderie and relationships she has built on the boardwalk. Marilyn’s not for profit food truck will still be working to see all the diversity of asbury continue to grow and flourish. In collaboration with the Boys and Girls club, Food For Thought recently received the Impact Grant which will provide mentorship, soft skills and job training for youth that come through the club.
Scott, Marilyn and their twin girls will continue to live in Asbury Park and look forward to enjoying the surf and boardwalk with family and friends, something they haven’t been able to do in a very long time.
“Growth is always a good thing”, says Marilyn. “Change is always challenging but can be a catalyst for something great!” She is proud of all the work they’ve done, the people they’ve touched, and the staff that have come in and out of the boardwalk pavilion. Marilyn feels they truly created an Ohana and have been able to do what we do best- give of ourselves.
Marilyn says they were lucky enough to find people she feels will do right by the boardwalk and Asbury Park and sincerely hopes you’ll join her for the last supper weekend to celebrate their 14 year run. “We’ve always enjoyed throwing good parties and breaking bread with our community. As we leave, we are throwing the biggest bash of all with our unwavering commitment to local live music, fun food and beverage.”
A newsletter will be going out soon introducing the new owners, BarCo Brands, to the community. “To take over a space from Marilyn Schlossbach, such an Asbury Park icon and pioneer and a woman who has done so much for the community and the hospitality industry, feels very special to me and is truly a dream come true.” says Andrea Pappas, BarCo Brands partner. Keep an eye on your inbox to opt in to their happenings.
Marilyn doesn’t miss a beat. As the beloved Langosta closes Saturday night Feb. 4, she christens her Long Branch location the following day with an Inaugural Art opening, “Finely Bursting Through”. Sunday Feb. 5, between 1-4pm the public is invited to view works with artists and organizers from NYC + NJ and jam out with local musicians, Hooper. Complimentary food and beverages will be served.
