Contractor picked for new West Side Community Center bathrooms
Renovations to cost about $67,000
The city council selected GCS Contractors of Oakhurst to complete restroom renovations at the West Side Community Center.
GCS Contractors bid about $67,000 for the project. The second lowest bid $93,000 in costs while the third lowest bid $131,000.
City engineer Joe Cunha had expected the project to cost $75,000 to $85,000, he said.
The restrooms, located near the community center’s gym, will “need to withstand kids,” Mayor Ed Johnson said at the Dec. 19 council meeting.
“That is paramount on this project,” Cunha said.
The restroom project will be funded through a community development block grant [CDBG]. The CDBG program is run by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development [HUD]. The city received some CDBG money in 2009 that has not yet been spent, city manager Terence Reidy said at an October council meeting.
The decision to redo the bathrooms was announced at the Oct. 17 council meeting. At the previous meeting on Oct. 3, members of the West Side Community Center’s board spoke up about a perceived lack of attention paid to the center. City officials said they were working on making improvements to the center, but that the center’s board members should also be fundraising.
The West Side Community Center is located at 115 Dewitt Ave.
