Baby Jesus figure missing from Allenhurst nativity
'The people in town are upset. Who steals the baby Jesus?'
The centerpiece of Allenhurst’s nativity scene was reported missing on Jan. 2 and police are currently following leads to locate the 150-pound figure of baby Jesus [pictured at right], according to Chief Robert Richter.
“The people in town are upset,” Richter said. “Who steals the baby Jesus?”
Police figure the culprits in this theft could have been mischievous young people.
“It was probably some prank by some kid,” Richter said. “If somebody returns it and they’re basically apologetic, we’re gonna show some amnesty here. We just want the thing returned.”
But if the police find the statue through an investigation, “charges will be pressed and we’re going to prosecute [the suspect],” Richter said.
The figure was purchased two years ago with the rest of the nativity scene, Richter said.
“It was expensive and it’s heavy,” he said.
The department is reviewing surveillance video to find leads. Anyone with information regarding the alleged theft is encouraged to call Allenhurst Police Headquarters at 732-531-2255. Police will respect anonymity.
The nativity scene was set up in the 200 block of Main Street, between Spier and Corlies avenues.
