Starting in the second semester of this school year, the high school will offer a fashion merchandising and design class for its students.

The curriculum for the class was approved by the board already, and High School Principal Reginald Mirthil is now being tasked with naming a teacher for the course, which begins Feb. 5.

Textbooks have not yet been purchased, curriculum director Elford Rawls-Dill said at the Jan. 3 board meeting, although the district is working with Maybelline Hicks, who wrote the curriculum, to find appropriate books.

The fashion curriculum is divided into three courses, which range from introductory marketing to actual sewing and design, Superintendent Denise Lowe said.

Board member Barbara Lesinski requested a briefing on the course at the next board meeting, which is being held on Monday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m.
