A city man was arrested late Sunday night when police found a firearm in his car, Police Chief Mark Kinmon said.

At about 11 p.m., three police officers — Khamil Warraich, Kevin Michael and Greg Parisi — were on foot patrol in the Vita Gardens [pictured above] and Stephen Manor housing complexes, Kinmon said. The officers were sent there due to recent criminal activity in that area.

The officers located a car that was occupied by Joshua Gaines, 23, of Asbury Park, Kinmon said. The officers had a conversation with Gaines based on a motor vehicle violation that drew their attention to the vehicle.

They then investigated the vehicle and found a nine-millimeter firearm, which was loaded, Kinmon said.

Gaines, who lives on Third Avenue, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, obstructing the administration of law and resisting arrest. He was also found to have outstanding municipal court warrants from three other municipalities, Kinmon said.
